Keeping a Positive Attitude in Recovery
Keeping a Positive Attitude in Recovery
Recovery from addiction is an ongoing process and not something that happens overnight. As such, it’s important to keep a positive attitude so that you can keep pushing forward, making progress, and reducing your risk of relapse. However, this can be easier said than done. It’s unrealistic to think that you need to be happy all the time – everyone goes through rough patches or has an off day – but you should have strategies ready to pick yourself back up and keep a generally positive outlook.
Find things to be grateful for and start a gratitude journal. Make it a point to write down two or three things each day. Focus on things that are meaningful to you and your life, not what you think other people want you to be thankful for.
Reflect on how your life has changed for the better instead of what you think you’re missing out on. Consider all of the things you’ve been able to do since entering recovery that you didn’t think were possible before. The little things count too!
Set goals for yourself so you have something to work toward. Think of both short-term and long-term things you want to accomplish. As you make progress toward these goals it can be very motivating and encouraging. You realize that you can be successful and achieve whatever you put your mind to. Just remember to keep your goals manageable and realistic, building up to bigger things.
Plan things to look forward to like dinner and a show with friends, or attending a sporting event. This gives you something positive to focus on and get excited about. Celebrate milestones in your recovery with special events to keep yourself motivated to stay on track.
