Prayers for Addicts
There are many prayers for addicts out there. We wanted to compile a list of the top prayers for people in recovery. These prayers are something you can turn to in times of need or when your prayer life becomes stale. Through the recovery process, we learn that prayer can shape our lives, and it is an essential part of our daily routine. Whether you are just starting in recovery or have multiple years and want to bring it back to the basics, our list of prayers for addicts can help you recommit to prayer in your recovery program.
We will start with the most famous prayer for addicts is the Serenity Prayer. The Serenity Prayer is said at every AA meeting, and it is often the first prayer learned in recovery. The prayer reads as follows.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.
12 Step Prayers
As you work through your 12 steps of with a sponsor, there are specific prayers for addicts, you will learn along the way.
When you get to the Third Step in Alcoholics Anonymous, you will learn the Third Step Prayer. The prayer reads as follows:
God, I offer myself to Thee — To build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life. May I do Thy will always!
If you are working your twelve steps in the Narcotics Anonymous program, the third step prayer reads as follows:
Take my will and my life, guide me in my recovery, show me how to live.
When you get to the Seventh Step, you will learn another prayer to mark your progress through the steps. The prayer reads as follows:
My Creator, I am now willing that you should have all of me, good & bad. I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to you & my fellows. Grant me strength, as I go out from here to do Your bidding.
The last prayer you will learn in the Twelve Steps is the St. Francis Prayer, or the Eleventh Step prayer. The St. Francis Prayer is a beautifully written prayer, and it reads as follows:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me bring love.
Where there is injury, let me bring pardon.
Where there is discord, let me bring union.
Where there is an error, let me bring truth.
Where there is doubt, let me bring faith.
Where there is despair, let me bring hope.
Where there is darkness, let me bring your light.
Where there is sadness, let me bring joy.
let me not seek as much
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love,
for it is in giving that one receives,
it is in self-forgetting that one finds,
it is in forgiving that one is forgiven,
it is in dying that one is raised to eternal life.
