How Life Changes After 30 Days in an Addiction Treatment Center
Real Life Changes: Addiction Treatment Center Statistics
Heroin use has dramatically increased across the U.S., spreading to groups it hadn’t previously reached, and deaths from overdose have soared, according to a new federal report released in February. Unless you have been living under a rock, you have likely seen the staggering number of overdose deaths related to heroin, fentanyl and other opiates so far in 2017. It is a scary epidemic that seems to get worse by the day. Life Changes. Addiction treatment center JC’s Recovery is fully invested in fighting the heroin epidemic and saving lives.
10 OVERDOSES PER DAY IN BROWARD COUNTY ALONE
Unfortunately, the rise in heroin abuse is associated with the closing of the notorious pain-pill clinics that plagued South Florida. In addition, heroin is increasingly compounded with fentanyl, a synthetic drug that can be lethal at low doses. Bad batches and uncertainty about potency are part of what’s causing so many deaths.
Between 2013 and 2014, the Florida Medical Examiners Commission says deaths from heroin increased 124%. Read that again – heroin deaths increased 124% from 2013 to 2014. The next year, heroin deaths rose 80%. The trend shows no sign of ebbing as 2017 has already seen countless preventable deaths from heroin.
FENTANYL CREATES EVEN MORE FATALITIES
What is fentanyl and why is it so dangerous? It is a synthetic opioid which is made in a laboratory that mimics similar properties of heroin – however – it is 50 to a 100 times stronger than morphine and 25 to 50 times stronger than heroin. The margin for error is so small when it comes to dosing and since addicts are not usually dosing experts, it has proven time and time again to end in tragedy when even just a little too much is used.
ASSOCIATED COSTS OF THE HEROIN EPIDEMIC IN FLORIDA
The Palm Beach Post has been investigating the heroin crisis for some time now and reported some unsettling numbers:
- “In the first nine months of 2015, Florida hospitals charged $1.1 billion for heroin-related visits, with many of those bills going unpaid.”
- “From 2010 to 2015, Florida hospitals charged $5.7 billion for heroin-related visits, including $2.1 billion to the state Medicaid program.”
- “In those same five years, hospitals charged $967 million for babies born addicted to heroin. Medicaid was the primary payer in almost all of those cases — $826 million.”
